Discover more about Beguinage of Hasselt

The Beguinage of Hasselt, or Begijnhof Hasselt, is a captivating historical site with origins tracing back to 1245. Originally established outside the city walls, it served as a community for beguines, women who dedicated their lives to God without taking formal religious vows. The initial settlement was destroyed in 1567 during the Iconoclastic Fury. In 1571, the beguines relocated within the city walls. The current Beguinage, the third in its history, was constructed between 1707 and 1780. Today, the Beguinage is characterized by its V-shaped arrangement of thirteen houses surrounding a garden-like courtyard. These houses, built in the Maasland Renaissance style, showcase the architectural charm of the era. The northern wing houses the oldest structures, dating back to the early 18th century. The Beguinage site has substantial heritage value and was classified as a monument in 1939. Visitors can explore the peaceful ambiance of the Beguinage, wandering through the quaint streets and admiring the well-preserved architecture. The ruins of the church, destroyed during World War II, serve as a reminder of the site's tumultuous past. The Beguinage is not only a historical landmark but also a cultural center, hosting various events and exhibitions throughout the year. It provides a tranquil retreat from the bustling city, inviting visitors to reflect on the lives of the beguines and the rich history of the site.
