Groot Begijnhof: A Tranquil UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Groot Begijnhof, or Grand Beguinage, in Leuven is a captivating UNESCO World Heritage site that offers visitors a serene escape into history. Established in the early 13th century, this beguinage served as a community for religious women, known as beguines, who sought a pious life without taking formal vows. The oldest written documents date back to 1232, with a Latin inscription in the church marking 1234 as its founding date. Spanning approximately 3 hectares (7.5 acres), the Groot Begijnhof features almost 100 houses and around 300 apartments, making it one of the largest remaining beguinages in the Low Countries. The river Dijle flows through the beguinage, splitting into canals and creating a picturesque island. Three bridges connect the different parts of the beguinage, adding to its charm. The beguinage resembles a small town with a network of narrow streets and squares. The red-brick houses, dating mainly from 1630-1670, showcase the local, traditional architecture with Baroque elements. Many houses have few windows on the ground floor to ensure the privacy of the beguines. The tented roof of the Chièvres House, built in 1561, is a distinctive feature referencing the towers of Arenberg Castle. The early Gothic basilica-style church incorporates Romanesque elements. Today, the Groot Begijnhof is owned by the University of Leuven and serves as a residential campus for academics. This blend of historical charm and academic life creates a unique atmosphere.
