Mary Magdalene Chapel: A Sanctuary in Brussels

Located just a short walk from Brussels Park and the Grand Square, the Mary Magdalene Chapel stands as one of Brussels' oldest and most historically significant religious structures. Originally established by the Brothers of Mercy in the 13th century, the chapel has undergone several renovations and restorations, blending Gothic and Baroque elements. Excavations during the 1950s revealed sub-foundation walls, suggesting an even older sanctuary possibly built by the Knights Templar.The chapel's architecture is characterized by its 13th-century red brickwork, a commanding grey stone nave, and Gothic arches surrounding the altar. The interior, while now unassuming, features modern stained-glass windows from the 1950s that create a striking contrast with the historic architecture. The chapel also incorporates the facade of the old Saint Anne chapel, dating back to 1665, with a Baroque portal from 1637 depicting Christ, Mary Magdalene, and angels.The chapel has faced numerous challenges throughout its history, including significant damage during the 1695 French bombardment. It was promptly reconstructed thanks to a donation from the baker's guild. In the wake of major urban redevelopment in Brussels during the early 20th century, the church was nearly demolished. Fortunately, its historical and architectural value was recognized, leading to a full restoration in the 1950s.
