Neumünster Abbey, officially known as Centre Culturel de Rencontre Abbaye de Neumünster, is nestled in the Grund district of Luxembourg City. This historical site has served many purposes throughout its existence, starting as a Benedictine abbey built in 1606 after the original Altmünster Abbey was destroyed. The abbey was rebuilt in 1688 after being destroyed by a fire in 1684 and expanded in 1720.Following the French Revolution, the abbey was secularized and repurposed as a police station, prison, and military hospital. It later became a barracks for Prussian forces and then a state prison until 1985. During World War II, the Nazis used it to imprison political resisters.Since reopening in 2004 after extensive restoration, Neumünster Abbey has become a cultural hub, hosting concerts, exhibitions, seminars, and other events. It also houses the European Institute of Cultural Routes and the Pierre Werner Cultural Institute. The abbey's architecture features a church and four wings enclosing an inner courtyard. Visitors can explore historical spaces, attend diverse events, and enjoy the serene environment by the Alzette River.
