If you are starting from the Cotonou Central Market (Marché Dantokpa), exit the market and head south towards Avenue Jean-Paul II. Walk along Avenue Jean-Paul II for approximately 1 km until you reach the intersection with Rue de l'Indépendance. Turn right onto Rue de l'Indépendance and continue walking straight. Place de l'indépendance will be on your left after about 500 meters, marked by a large open area and local sculptures.
