Punakha Dzong: The Majestic Fortress of Bhutan

Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving from Haa Valley to Punakha Dzong, start by heading southeast on the main road from Haa. Continue on the road until you reach the junction at Chuzom, where you will take a left turn onto the Paro-Wangdue Phodrang Highway (also known as the Thimphu-Wangdue Highway). Follow this highway for approximately 60 km, enjoying the scenic views along the way. After passing through Wangdue Phodrang town, keep an eye out for the signs indicating Punakha Dzong. Turn left onto the road leading directly to the dzong. The total travel time is around 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.

• Public Transportation

  To reach Punakha Dzong via public transport, you can take a local bus from Haa to Thimphu first. Buses typically leave several times a day from the Haa bus station. The ride to Thimphu takes about 1.5 hours. From Thimphu, you will need to change buses and take a bus to Wangdue Phodrang. Once you arrive in Wangdue, you can catch another local bus or a taxi to Punakha Dzong, which is about 20 km away. The entire journey may take around 4 to 5 hours, including waiting and transfer times. Make sure to have some cash on hand for bus fares, as they may not accept cards.

• Taxi

  For a more convenient option, you can hire a taxi from Haa Valley directly to Punakha Dzong. You can negotiate a flat rate with the driver, which is generally around 3000-4000 Nu (Bhutanese currency) for a one-way trip. This option allows for a more flexible travel schedule and the possibility to stop along the way for photos or refreshments. The journey will take approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, similar to driving by car.
