Getting There

  • Hiking

    From the center of Mongar, start by heading towards the Mongar Dzong. Once you reach the Dzong, continue on the main road towards the east. After approximately 1.5 km, you will come to a fork in the road; take the left path which leads toward the Phobjikha Valley. Follow this trail for about 10 km through the scenic countryside. You will pass small villages and lush green fields. After about 2 hours of hiking, you will arrive at the Phobjikha Valley. From here, Gangtey Monastery is located about 30 minutes uphill on foot. Look for signs indicating the path to the monastery.

  • Biking

    If you prefer biking, rent a bicycle from one of the local shops in Mongar. Start at the Mongar Dzong and head east on the main road. You will need to bike around 12 km towards the Phobjikha Valley. The route is mostly downhill, so take your time and enjoy the beautiful views. Once you reach Phobjikha Valley, secure your bike and begin the hike up to Gangtey Monastery, which will take about 30 minutes. This biking route offers a mix of smooth roads and some gravel paths, so be prepared for varying terrains.

  • Walking

    For a leisurely walk, start at the Mongar Chhu (river) and follow the river path upstream. This will lead you towards the outskirts of Mongar. After about 3 km, you will need to cross a small footbridge over the river. Continue walking on the path that follows the river until you reach a small village. From there, take the trail that leads toward Phobjikha Valley, which is approximately 8 km away. Upon reaching the valley, look for the signs leading to Gangtey Monastery, which is a short uphill walk from the valley floor.
