Drukgyel Dzong: A Glimpse into Bhutan's Heritage

Getting There

• Walking

  Starting from the center of Paro, head south towards the main street, and follow it as it curves to the right. Continue walking for about 1.5 kilometers until you reach the junction with the road leading to Drukgyel Dzong. At this junction, you will see a sign indicating the direction to Drukgyel Dzong. Turn left onto the road that leads to the dzong. It is approximately a 10-15 minute walk from the junction. The path will take you through picturesque landscapes and local villages, providing a glimpse of Bhutanese rural life. As you approach, you will see the dzong perched on a hill, offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

• Hiking

  For those looking for a more adventurous route, start your hike from the Paro Taktsang trailhead. This trailhead is located about 10 kilometers from Paro town. From the trailhead, follow the well-marked trail for approximately 2 to 3 hours, enjoying the breathtaking views of the Paro Valley. Once you reach a viewpoint overlooking Drukgyel Dzong, you can descend towards the dzong itself. This route offers a unique perspective of the dzong from above and is ideal for those who enjoy a more strenuous hike.

• Bicycle

  If you prefer biking, rent a bicycle from one of the local shops in Paro. Begin your journey from the town center and take the main road heading towards Drukgyel Dzong. It's a scenic ride of about 6 kilometers, mostly downhill. Be cautious of the traffic and enjoy the beautiful views of the valley as you pedal towards the dzong. Once you arrive, you can lock your bicycle at the designated area and explore the historical site on foot.
