Getting There

  • Walking

    Begin your journey at the Punakha Dzong, located in the center of Punakha. From the Dzong, head southeast on the main road toward the intersection with the Wangdue Phodrang highway (also known as the East-West Highway). After about 500 meters, you will reach the intersection. Continue straight onto the highway, which will take you towards Thimphu. Follow the highway for approximately 2.5 kilometers until you see signs for Semtokha. Turn left onto the road leading towards Semtokha, which is clearly marked. Continue straight for about 1 kilometer, keeping an eye out for the Simtokha Dzong, which will be on your right. The walking distance from Punakha Dzong to Simtokha Dzong is approximately 4 kilometers, and it should take you about 1 to 1.5 hours to walk there.

  • Public Transport (Bus)

    Start at the main bus station in Punakha, which is located near the Punakha Dzong. Look for buses heading towards Thimphu. Board the bus and inform the driver that you wish to get off at Semtokha. The bus ride will take about 20-30 minutes. Once you arrive at Semtokha, disembark and walk approximately 500 meters to your right. You will see Simtokha Dzong ahead. The total travel time, including waiting for the bus, should be around 1 hour.
