Discover more about Temple of Mithras

Nestled in the heart of Jajce, the Temple of Mithras is a remarkable historical site that provides a window into the religious practices of the Roman Empire. Dedicated to Mithras, an invincible Persian sun god, this temple dates back to the 2nd to 4th centuries AD. The cult of Mithras spread throughout the Roman Empire, and this temple stands as a testament to its presence in the region of Dalmatia, which included much of present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina. The temple's architecture reflects the typical Mithraic style. Followers often chose caves for worship, symbolizing the cosmic cave where Mithras performed his legendary deeds. Lacking a natural cave, they constructed a small, single-celled temple, a 'spelaea,' partially buried to evoke a cave-like atmosphere. Discovered in 1931 during a private house construction, the site was protected by the Society for the Preservation of Antiquities in Jajce. Today, a modern steel and glass structure safeguards the temple, allowing visitors to observe the interior. Inside, remnants of intricate stone carvings and the temple's layout reveal the careful planning of Roman construction. The temple's design includes an irregular square cell. Although small, the temple offers a unique and intimate experience, allowing visitors to connect with the past and appreciate the craftsmanship of ancient artisans.
