Discover more about Temple of Mithras in Jajce

Nestled in the heart of Jajce, the Temple of Mithras stands as a captivating historical site, inviting visitors to step back into the world of ancient Rome. Dating back to the 2nd century AD, with renovations in the 4th century, this temple is dedicated to Mithras, an invincible sun god whose worship was widespread throughout the Roman Empire. The temple's existence highlights the religious practices of Roman soldiers and merchants who carried the Mithraic cult from the Orient to the Mediterranean. The Jajce Mithraeum, also known as Jajački Mitrej, features underground chambers and stone reliefs that reflect the mysterious and exclusive rituals of Mithraism. Followers of Mithras often chose caves for their sacred sites, symbolizing the cosmic cave where Mithras performed his legendary deeds. In the absence of natural caves, they constructed small, single-celled temples called spelaea, partially buried to evoke a cave-like environment. The Jajce site is one such example. The temple was accidentally discovered during construction in 1931 and was subsequently protected by a stone structure. Today, it is encased in a modern steel and glass structure, allowing visitors to view the interior without entering. For a closer look, arrangements can be made with the Ethnological Museum of Jajce. The Jajce Mithraeum is not only a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina but also part of the Natural and Architectural Ensemble of Jajce, proposed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
