Discover more about Temple of Mithras

Nestled in the heart of Jajce, the Temple of Mithras is a captivating historical site that transports visitors back to the Roman era. Dedicated to the god Mithras, whose worship was inspired by Iranian traditions and became popular throughout the Roman Empire, this temple provides insight into the religious practices of the time. The temple, likely constructed in the 4th century AD, though possibly as early as the 2nd century, was accidentally discovered during construction in 1931. Recognizing its significance, the Society for the Preservation of Antiquities in Jajce purchased the site and took measures to protect it. The temple's design reflects the Mithraic tradition of seeking cave-like spaces for worship. Lacking a natural cave, followers constructed a small, single-celled temple, or spelaea, partially buried to evoke the atmosphere of a cave. Today, the Temple of Mithras is protected by a modern structure that allows visitors to view the interior while preserving the site. To enter the temple, visitors can contact the Ethnographic Museum in advance. The temple is a designated National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina and is part of the Natural and Architectural Ensemble of Jajce, which has been nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
