Memorial Complex Battle of the Neretva: A Testament to Resilience

The Memorial Complex of the Battle of the Neretva in Jablanica stands as a powerful reminder of a pivotal moment in World War II. Opened on November 12, 1978, the complex marks the 35th anniversary of the Battle of the Neretva, honoring the bravery and resilience of those involved. This battle, also known as the 'Battle for the Wounded,' saw Yugoslav Partisans, led by Josip Broz Tito, facing overwhelming Axis forces while evacuating over 4,000 wounded soldiers across the Neretva River in early 1943.The complex is built on the very site where these heroic actions took place, preserving the authenticity and historical integrity of the events. Designed by Branko Tadić, Zdravko Dunđerović, and Mustafa Ramić, the museum showcases modern architectural elements and houses exhibits that narrate the story of the battle. The main exhibit is the demolished bridge on the Neretva, a symbol of the struggle and triumph of the Battle for the Wounded. Visitors can also explore the remains of the narrow-gauge railway and a 73 series locomotive, crafted in 1913 by the Krauss factory in Linz, Austria. A bunker on the left bank, once used by Chetnik forces, and a meeting point with an eternal flame add to the historical depth.The Memorial Complex provides a space for reflection and remembrance, set amidst the beautiful landscape of the Neretva River valley. In 2009, the Commission to Preserve National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina declared the memorial complex a National Monument, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
