The Nekropola žrtvama fašizma Smrike, or simply the Smrike Monument, is a poignant war memorial located near Novi Travnik, Bosnia and Herzegovina. This site commemorates the approximately 700 civilians who were brutally executed here in August 1941 by the occupying Ustaše forces during World War II. Designed by the esteemed architect Bogdan Bogdanović, the necropolis was completed in 1975. The monument comprises twelve megalithic sculptures crafted from Bihacite stone, arranged along paths and steps. These monoliths have been interpreted as stone dragon sentinels, paired snakes, or heads of soldiers, and are adorned with primitive symbols reminiscent of the Bogomils. Originally, the memorial site covered 2 square kilometers, but encroaching farmland has reduced it to less than 200 square meters. The monument serves as a powerful reminder of the atrocities of the past and the resilience of the human spirit. In 2012, the Necropolis for the Victims of Fascism was declared a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina, solidifying its cultural and historical importance. While time and war have taken their toll, with some damage to the site, it remains a place for reflection and remembrance.
