Discover more about Baščaršija Mosque

The Baščaršija Mosque, also known as Havadža Durak Mosque, stands as a testament to Sarajevo's rich Islamic heritage. Located on the main square of the old trading center, Baščaršija, the mosque provides a serene contrast to the bustling market atmosphere. It is believed to have been built before 1528, evidenced by a manuscript mentioning the neighborhood around the Havadža Durak Masjid. The mosque's architecture features a main dome, an open portico covered by smaller cupolas, and a graceful stone minaret. The courtyard, though small, is a peaceful oasis with a fountain, roses, and poplar trees. Inside, visitors can admire the hand-drawn illustrations of flowers and messages that adorn the interior. The mosque is known for its excellent acoustics. Throughout its history, the Baščaršija Mosque has undergone several restorations due to fires and war damage. It was badly damaged during the Bosnian War (1992-1995) and subsequently reconstructed. In 2006, it was declared a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Today, the Baščaršija Mosque remains an important place of worship and a symbol of Sarajevo's resilience and cultural diversity.
