Discover more about Ferhadija Mosque

The Ferhadija Mosque, centrally located in Sarajevo, is a significant landmark embodying the city's Ottoman past. Constructed between 1561 and 1562 by Ferhad-beg Vuković-Desisalić, the Sanjak Bey of Bosnia, the mosque showcases the refined classical Ottoman architectural style that flourished during the empire's Golden Age. The mosque's design features a single dome over the prayer area and three smaller domes adorning the cloister. Its elegant minaret complements the structure's balanced proportions. Over the centuries, the mosque complex expanded to include a mekteb (a children's school), an imaret (public kitchen), fountains, and a cemetery. However, fires in 1679 and 1897 destroyed many of these ancillary structures, leaving only a small cemetery with around twenty tombstones today. The Ferhadija Mosque suffered damage during the Bosnian War in the 1990s, with grenades striking the main cupola. Restoration efforts, completed in two phases, not only repaired the war damage but also revealed artistic styles from the Austro-Hungarian period and earlier, enriching the mosque's historical narrative. The restoration included the recovery of 16th and 17th-century features, such as the mihrab and the lighting. Today, the Ferhadija Mosque and its adjacent cemetery are recognized as a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Visitors can appreciate the mosque's detailed arabesque paintings and the harmonious blend of architectural styles that reflect different eras. The mosque provides a tranquil space for prayer and contemplation, as well as a deeper understanding of Sarajevo's layered history.
