Discover more about Partisan Memorial Cemetery

The Partisan Memorial Cemetery in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, stands as a powerful symbol of anti-fascist resistance and a tribute to the fallen Yugoslav Partisans of Mostar during World War II. Constructed between 1959 and 1965, the cemetery was designed by the acclaimed architect Bogdan Bogdanović, and it was opened on September 25th, 1965. The construction was initiated by Džemal Bijedić, a Yugoslav politician. The cemetery is located on Bijeli Brijeg, offering a unique architectural, aesthetic, and landscape design. The terraced design, modeled after examples from antiquity, is cut into the hillside, covering 5000 square meters. The complex is built with poured concrete, rebar, paving stones, and rubble. The names of 810 Partisan fighters are engraved on stone markers across the upper terraces. However, the cemetery suffered significant damage during the Bosnian War in the 1990s, falling into disrepair and becoming a target of vandalism. Despite these challenges, efforts have been made to restore and preserve the site, and it was proclaimed a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2006. In April 2023, it was listed as one of the seven most endangered heritage sites in Europe. The cemetery is more than just a resting place; it is a cultural landmark that embodies the spirit of unity and resistance. It serves as an educational experience, inviting visitors to reflect on the sacrifices made in the pursuit of freedom and peace.
