Discover more about Sutjeska

The Sutjeska River, meaning 'gorge' or 'canyon,' is a defining feature of Sutjeska National Park. This 35km-long river originates beneath Volujak Mountain and flows into the Drina River. The river has carved an impressive 1,200-meter-deep canyon, separating Zelengora Mountain from Maglić, Volujak, and Bioč mountains. The river's course runs primarily through the national park, ensuring a high level of protection for its waters. The Sutjeska is known for its rich salmonid population, especially brown trout, making it a great location for fly fishing. The lower stretches of the river serve as a spawning ground for huchen, which migrate from the Drina River during spawning season. Historically, the Sutjeska River valley was the site of the Battle of Sutjeska in 1943, a major World War II engagement. Today, the park commemorates this battle with monuments and memorials, including the iconic Valley of Heroes. The river not only provides a habitat for diverse aquatic species but also fills the natural Tjentiste pool, the biggest open-air pool in this part of Europe. The Hrčavka River, a tributary of the Sutjeska, is known for its canyoning opportunities, with cascades and natural pools.
