Discover more about Fort Vrmac

Fort Vrmac, also known as Werk Vermac, is a former Austro-Hungarian fortification erected on the Vrmac mountain range, strategically positioned between Kotor and Tivat. Constructed between 1894 and 1897, it stands as a testament to the region's turbulent history and strategic importance in the Adriatic. The fortress was part of a network of military defenses designed to protect the Bay of Kotor, a crucial naval base for the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Perched 475 meters above sea level, Fort Vrmac offered a commanding view of the surrounding areas, including Kotor to the east, the Trinity Pass to the south, and the Župa Valley to the west. Its location on the Vrmac ridge, a limestone formation dividing the inner and outer parts of the Bay of Kotor, made it a key defensive point. The fortress was equipped with heavy artillery and could house up to 177 soldiers and 5 officers. Throughout its history, Fort Vrmac underwent several upgrades and renovations. By World War I, it was the most modern fortress defending the naval base at Kotor. Despite enduring heavy bombardment by Montenegrin forces during the war, it was repaired before being disarmed and eventually abandoned after a period of occupation by Yugoslav troops. Today, Fort Vrmac stands as one of the best-preserved Austro-Hungarian fortifications in the Bay of Kotor area. Visitors can explore its ruins, including the thick walls, underground tunnels and metal turrets, and imagine the historical events that once unfolded within its walls. The fortress is accessible via hiking trails, offering a moderate challenge with rewarding views of Kotor Bay and the surrounding mountains. The trail from Kotor starts in the village of Muo and takes you through lush forests and rocky outcrops. Another trail, the Vrmac Ridge Trail, connects Fort Vrmac with Sveti Ilija, the highest peak along the ridge, offering panoramic views of the Dinaric Alps and Boka Bay.
