The Katedrala Rođenja Blažene Djevice Marije (Cathedral of the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary) is the primary church of the Trebinje-Mrkan Diocese. Construction began in 1880, shortly after the arrival of the Austro-Hungarian army, and was completed and consecrated on June 7, 1884. The following day, a grand outdoor celebration was held. The church is dedicated to the Nativity of Mary. Located in the center of Trebinje, the cathedral is situated on the right bank of the Trebišnjica river, surrounded by a city park with tall plane trees. In 1892, the Trebinje diocese was divided into two deaneries, with seats in Trebinje and Stolac. Pope Leo XIII gifted the church a large painting of the Virgin Mary with the baby Jesus at the dedication of the newly built church. Two sacristies were added in 1904. During World War I, the church building was in poor condition, and repairs were carried out between 1917 and 1918. At that time, stained glass windows, donated by prominent Trebinje families, were installed. A small bell tower was built next to the church in 1928 by Marko Marić from Riđica, featuring the inscription: 'I praise God, I call the living, I mourn the dead, I drive away lightning'. In 1984, Trebinje priests and believers celebrated the millennium of the Diocese. In 2006, the cathedral was declared a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
