Stari Grad Trebinje, also known as Kastel, is a captivating historical landmark that transports visitors back in time with its well-preserved architecture and charming cobblestone streets. Situated in the heart of Trebinje, in the southernmost part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Old Town boasts stunning views of the surrounding hills and the sparkling Trebišnjica River. Established in the early 18th century during Ottoman rule, Stari Grad features narrow streets, stone houses, and historic buildings that reflect a blend of Ottoman and Mediterranean influences. As you wander through the ancient streets, you'll encounter quaint cafes, artisan shops, and small squares bustling with life. The town's Mediterranean architectural style reflects its historical ties with the Adriatic coast. The Old Town owes its appearance to the Ottomans, including the city walls and several mosques. The most important person for the development of the Old Town as a fortress is Osman Pasha, the founder of the Resulbegović family. He started construction in 1714, which was briefly interrupted by the war with Venice. Builders were brought from Dubrovnik, and the workforce was from the local area. During Osman's reign, the Sultan Ahmed and Osman-pasha mosques were built, along with the Sahat-kula (clock tower), which is still resistant to the many years that have passed. Visiting Stari Grad is not just about exploring its historical landmarks; it is also an invitation to immerse yourself in the local culture. Take a moment to relax at one of the charming cafes, sip on traditional Bosnian coffee, and engage with the friendly locals who are eager to share their stories.
