Discover more about Tunel Stari Grad

The Tunel Stari Grad is more than just a passage; it's a symbolic threshold connecting visitors to the historical heart of Trebinje. The Old Town, also known as Kastel, was established by the Ottomans, who needed to organize their territories in Herzegovina. The most important person for the development of the Old Town as a fortress was Osman Pasha, the founder of the Resulbegović family. Construction began in 1714 but was briefly interrupted by war with Venice. Builders were brought from Dubrovnik, with the workforce drawn from the surrounding areas. The Old Town initially had a triangular shape but became rounded over time. The tunnel leads into a serene space, protected by walls that have stood the test of time. Within these walls lie historical structures, cafes, and restaurants. Exploring the tunnel and the Old Town offers a unique experience, immersing visitors in the blend of Ottoman and Mediterranean influences that define Trebinje. In 2013, the City Administration of Trebinje completed the reconstruction of the main gate, the tunnel of the old city. Today, the tunnel provides access to the Old Town, where visitors can explore mosques, wander along cobblestone streets, and soak in the atmosphere of this historic enclave.
