Discover more about Mlinčići

Nestled between the Great and Small Pliva Lakes, just outside the royal town of Jajce, lies Mlinčići, a captivating cluster of small wooden watermills. These historic mills, some dating back to the 16th century, offer a unique glimpse into Bosnia and Herzegovina's past. Built of oak wood, the Mlinčići (meaning 'little mills') exemplify traditional local carpentry skills and the resourcefulness of utilizing water power for grinding grain. Once numbering as many as 26, these mills were owned by landowners who leased them to local residents, who in turn paid a tax in flour. The watermills harnessed the power of the Pliva River, which flows between the two lakes, using a system of small canals to distribute water to each mill. Although the mills are no longer in operation, several have been restored to their original appearance, offering visitors a chance to imagine life in a bygone era. Declared a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2009, Mlinčići attracts tourists and photographers alike with its charming scenery and tranquil atmosphere. Wooden footbridges weave between the mills, allowing visitors to explore the area and peek inside some of the structures. The surrounding landscape, with its lush greenery and the gentle sound of flowing water, adds to the enchanting experience. Mlinčići is more than just a collection of old mills; it's a living testament to Bosnia's cultural heritage and a reminder of the simple, sustainable practices of the past.
