Discover more about Forteresse de Jajce

Perched atop a hill in the heart of Jajce, the Forteresse de Jajce (Jajce Fortress) is a historic structure that embodies centuries of Bosnian resilience. Founded in the 14th century by Hrvoje Vukčić Hrvatinić, a powerful feudal lord, the fortress became a crucial defense point. Its strategic location at the confluence of the Pliva and Vrbas Rivers made it a coveted prize, witnessing battles between the Kingdom of Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. In 1421, King Stjepan Tomasevic moved his royal court to Jajce, marking the city as the capital of the Kingdom of Bosnia. The fortress was enhanced with a palace and a royal portal adorned with the Bosnian coat of arms. For over a century, it helped maintain the city's independence until the Ottomans finally seized it in 1527, making Jajce the last Bosnian town to fall under Ottoman rule. Today, the fortress offers visitors a chance to explore remnants of old towers and fortifications, imagining the battles and sieges of the past. The panoramic views from the fortress showcase the stunning landscape, including the lush valleys and the meeting point of the Pliva and Vrbas rivers. The fortress is a short walk away from the Jajce Waterfall and the old town.
