Discover more about Madikwe Game Reserve

Madikwe Game Reserve, located in the North West Province of South Africa near the Botswana border, is a captivating destination for wildlife enthusiasts. Established in 1991, Madikwe distinguishes itself as a malaria-free reserve, making it an attractive option for families and those sensitive to malaria concerns. The reserve's unique location lies in a transition zone between bushveld and Kalahari thornveld, resulting in remarkable biodiversity. Madikwe's history is as rich as its wildlife. The area was once traversed by explorers and traders in the 1800s, and it holds Stone Age and Iron Age archaeological sites. The reserve's transformation from marginal farmland to a thriving wildlife haven is a testament to conservation efforts. Operation Phoenix, initiated in the 1990s, saw the translocation of over 8,000 animals of 28 species into the reserve, representing the largest wildlife translocation in the world. Today, Madikwe is home to 60 mammal species, including the African elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo, and leopard – the famed 'Big Five'. In addition to these iconic animals, visitors can encounter cheetah, wild dog, giraffe, zebra, and a variety of antelope. With over 350 bird species recorded, Madikwe is also a paradise for birdwatchers. The landscape features diverse habitats, from open plains and rocky outcrops to the riverine environment along the Marico River. Madikwe is run as a partnership between the state, local communities, and the private sector. This unique approach ensures that conservation efforts benefit both the environment and the surrounding communities. With fewer vehicles compared to more well-known parks, Madikwe offers a more exclusive and intimate safari experience.
