Discover more about Kolobeng (Livingstone's Third Mission)

Kolobeng Mission, also known as the Livingstone Memorial, marks the site of David Livingstone's third and final mission in Southern Africa. Founded in 1847, the mission is located near the village of Mmankgodi, approximately 25 kilometers west of Gaborone, Botswana. Livingstone, along with his wife Mary and their children, aimed to convert the local Bakwena people to Christianity while also providing education and medical assistance. During his time at Kolobeng, Livingstone converted Sechele I, the leader of the Bakwena, and introduced irrigation methods using the nearby Kolobeng River. However, the mission faced challenges, including a severe drought in 1848 that strained relations with the local community. In 1852, Boer farmers attacked the settlement during the Battle of Dimawe, leading to the mission's abandonment. Today, visitors can explore the remaining foundations of the church and Livingstone's house. The site also includes the grave of Livingstone's infant daughter, Elizabeth. Kolobeng Mission serves as a reminder of Livingstone's work, the complexities of early European engagement with African cultures, and Botswana's rich heritage.
