Chobe National Park, located in northern Botswana, is a premier wildlife destination famed for its exceptional biodiversity and stunning landscapes. Established in 1968, it was Botswana's first national park and encompasses approximately 11,700 square kilometers. The park is named after the Chobe River, which forms its northern boundary and is a vital water source for the region's abundant wildlife. The park's history dates back to the early 20th century when the area was recognized for its rich wildlife and the need for conservation. The original inhabitants were the San bushmen, nomadic hunter-gatherers whose rock paintings can still be found within the park. The park's diverse ecosystems include the Chobe Riverfront, known for its lush plains and dense forests; the Linyanti Marshes, a remote and exclusive area; and the Savuti region, famous for its predators. Chobe is particularly renowned for its massive elephant population, estimated to be around 50,000, the largest in Africa. Visitors can also see large herds of buffalo, prides of lions, leopards, zebras, giraffes, and over 440 bird species. The park offers a range of safari experiences, including game drives, boat safaris, and guided walking tours, providing ample opportunities to witness the incredible wildlife up close. The best time to visit Chobe National Park is during the dry season (April to October) when wildlife congregates around water sources, making for excellent game viewing.
