The Khama Rhino Sanctuary, located 25km north of Serowe, Botswana, is a remarkable testament to community-driven conservation. Founded in 1989, the sanctuary arose from concerns about escalating rhino poaching and the dwindling populations of these magnificent animals. Led by local residents and conservationists, including Lt. Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama, the sanctuary was established to provide a protected breeding ground for rhinos and to restore the area's rich biodiversity. Covering 4,300 hectares of Kalahari sandveld, the sanctuary offers a diverse habitat for a wide array of wildlife. Both black and white rhinos roam freely, along with over 30 other mammal species and more than 230 species of birds. Visitors can observe zebras, giraffes, wildebeests, various antelopes, and ostriches, set against the backdrop of the Kalahari landscape. The sanctuary's commitment to conservation has led to successful rhino breeding programs and the reintroduction of rhinos to other reserves in Botswana. The Khama Rhino Sanctuary offers various activities, including guided game drives, self-drive tours, and nature walks. Visitors can explore the sanctuary's diverse landscapes, from open savannahs to lush riverbeds, and encounter the unique flora and fauna of the region.
