Discover more about Nata Bird Sanctuary

Nata Bird Sanctuary, established in 1993, is a 230 square kilometer (89 sq mi) reserve dedicated to preserving wildlife, especially bird species. Situated on the northeastern edge of the Sowa Pan, it forms a crucial part of the Makgadikgadi Pans, one of the largest salt pan systems in the world. This unique landscape becomes a haven for waterbirds, particularly after the rainy season when the Nata River flows into the pan. The sanctuary is a community-driven project, managed by the Kalahari Conservation Society, with members from the local villages of Nata, Sepako, Maposa, and Manxotae. This ensures that tourism directly benefits the local communities, fostering sustainable conservation efforts. Nata Bird Sanctuary is renowned as one of only three nesting places for flamingos in Africa and has been recognized by UNESCO as one of the largest breeding sites for both Lesser and Greater Flamingos. The sanctuary hosts over 165 bird species, including pelicans, ducks, geese, spoonbills, and eagles. Beyond birds, the sanctuary is also home to various mammals, including kudu, oryx, springbok, zebra, jackals and more. Visitors can explore the sanctuary by vehicle, with a viewing platform providing excellent vantage points. The best time to visit is during the wet season (November to March) when the pans fill with water and attract a multitude of birds. However, the dry season (April to October) also offers unique landscapes and wildlife viewing opportunities.
