Discover more about Nata Bird Sanctuary

Nata Bird Sanctuary, established in 1992, is a 230 square kilometer community-based conservation project located on the northeastern edge of the Sowa Pan in Botswana. The sanctuary was founded to protect wildlife, particularly bird species, and is one of the few nesting sites for flamingos in Africa. Managed by a trust comprised of four local communities, the sanctuary's proceeds are reinvested in local development projects. The sanctuary is part of the Makgadikgadi Pans Important Bird Area (IBA) and provides refuge for diverse birdlife. After the rains, the nutrient-rich pans attract a multitude of waterbirds, including Chestnut-banded Plovers, Great White Pelicans, and Pink-backed Pelicans. As the pan dries, it becomes home to the largest congregation of Lesser Flamingos in Southern Africa. Over 370 bird species have been recorded in the sanctuary. Mammals such as kudu, oryx, springbok, and zebra also inhabit the area. Visitors can explore the sanctuary by vehicle, with a viewing platform providing excellent views. The best time to visit is during the wet season (November to March) when the birdlife is most abundant. Nata Lodge and campsites near the entrance offer accommodation. The sanctuary is a testament to community-based conservation, where tourism directly benefits local livelihoods.
