Khama III Memorial Museum: A Glimpse into Botswana's Royal Past

The Khama III Memorial Museum, established in 1985, stands as a beacon of cultural heritage in Serowe, Botswana. The museum is dedicated to preserving the history of the Khama family, one of Southern Africa's most influential dynasties, and the traditions of the Bamangwato people. The museum is located in a building that was built around 1910 and donated by Lenyetse Seretse. Inside, visitors can explore a diverse collection of exhibits, including family relics, vintage photographs, military uniforms, personal letters, and household items that belonged to Chief Khama III and his descendants. These artifacts offer a glimpse into the lives of the Khama dynasty and their impact on Botswana's history. One of the museum's highlights is the Bessie Head exhibit, which celebrates the life and work of the renowned South African writer who found refuge and inspiration in Serowe. The exhibit features her notes, sketches, writings, and a reconstruction of her workspace, providing an intimate look into her life and literary process. In addition to the Khama family and Bessie Head exhibits, the museum also showcases artifacts related to the culture of the San people, musical instruments from the eastern Kalahari, and temporary art displays. The museum also features exhibits on African snakes and animals, as well as correspondence, uniforms, and furniture.
