Old Palapye Church: Echoes of Botswana's Past

Nestled near the modern town of Palapye, the Old Palapye Church is a captivating historical site that whispers tales of Botswana's past. Constructed between 1891 and 1894, this Gothic-style church served as a central pillar of the Bangwato community during the reign of Kgosi Khama III. Khama III, a Christian leader, moved his capital to Phalatswe (Old Palapye) in 1889 due to water shortages in Shoshong, transforming the area into a bustling settlement of around 30,000 people. The church, built by the London Missionary Society, is made from locally quarried red mudbrick, a unique architectural choice that makes it one of Botswana's most remarkable ruins. Although the capital was moved to Serowe in 1902 due to dwindling water supplies, the remains of the church stand tall. Today, visitors can explore the evocative ruins, imagining life in this once-thriving capital and appreciating the blend of cultural and religious influences that shaped the region. The site also contains remnants of other structures, including trading stores, an elementary school, and a prison, offering a broader view of the historical village.The Old Palapye site is more than just the church; it's a multicultural heritage site with artifacts from the Stone Age, Farming Community Period, and the Historical era. The site was gazetted as a national monument in 1938, ensuring its protection and preservation for future generations.
