Khama Rhino Sanctuary: A Haven for Rhinos and Wildlife

Khama Rhino Sanctuary is a community-based wildlife project established in 1992 to protect the endangered rhinoceros and restore the area to its former natural state. The sanctuary spans approximately 4,300 hectares (8,585 acres) of Kalahari sandveld centered around the Serwe Pan, a large grassy depression with natural waterholes. This unique habitat supports a diverse range of wildlife, making it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts. The sanctuary is home to both white and black rhinos, offering visitors the chance to see these magnificent creatures in their natural environment. Other wildlife that have settled naturally or been translocated to the sanctuary include zebra, blue wildebeest, giraffe, eland, springbok, impala, gemsbok, kudu, steenbok, duiker, red hartebeest, waterbuck, warthog, leopard, ostrich, African wild cat, caracal, small spotted genet, black-backed jackal, bat-eared fox, and brown hyena. Over 230 bird species have been identified here, including Abdim's stork and the bearded woodpecker. The Khama Rhino Sanctuary plays a vital role in rhino conservation, with a long-term goal to create a safe breeding environment for black and white rhinos and reintroduce them to their natural habitats. As of 2014, 28 rhinos had been relocated to other wilderness areas in Southern Africa. The sanctuary's success is attributed to anti-poaching patrols carried out by rangers and the Botswana Defence Force. Visitors can explore the sanctuary through self-drive safaris, guided game drives, or bush walks. The rhino tracking walk is highly recommended, offering an informative experience to learn about rhino tracks and signs, with the possibility of spotting these incredible animals on foot. The sanctuary also features an environmental education center, campsites, chalets, a restaurant, and a curio shop.
