Mogonye Gorge, a natural wonder tucked away near Lekgolobotlo in southeastern Botswana, offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the raw beauty of the Botswana landscape. The gorge is characterized by its stunning rock formations, steep cliffs, and lush vegetation, carved by centuries of water erosion. It serves as a significant nature preserve, protecting various flora and fauna endemic to the region. Hiking trails wind through the area, catering to both seasoned trekkers and casual walkers. As you journey through the gorge, you'll be enchanted by panoramic views, rugged cliffs, and diverse wildlife, including various bird species and small mammals. The gorge also holds cultural significance for the local Balete people, who regard the area as a sacred site. Historically, Mogonye Gorge provided refuge for a woman named Mmamotshwane during the Batswana-Boer War in 1852, after whom the largest gorge in the area is named. The Mogonye community, in collaboration with the Department of National Museum and Monuments, constructed the thatched gate entrance and camping site through the Ipelegeng (Self-Reliance) Programme, officially opening it in 2014. Today, visitors can explore Dinkgwana, a sacred ancestral site, Kgophu ya Dinonyane (Birds Spring), and Khophu ya Thukwi (Aardvarks), where aardvarks were once abundant.
