Discover more about Gaborone Game Reserve

The Gaborone Game Reserve, a 5-square-kilometer haven established in 1988, provides a unique opportunity to witness Botswana's indigenous wildlife without venturing far from the capital city. Created by the Kalahari Conservation Society, the reserve aimed to bring wildlife closer to the people of Gaborone, fostering conservation awareness and offering a recreational space. Despite its modest size, the reserve boasts a diverse landscape of savannahs, acacia forests, and small, artificially created dams. This variety supports a range of animals, including zebras, giraffes, wildebeest, various antelopes like kudu and impala, warthogs, and ostriches. Birdwatchers will find the reserve particularly rewarding, with numerous resident and migrant species easily spotted around the dam area. Keep an eye out for kingfishers, herons, and other waterbirds. The Gaborone Game Reserve is designed for self-guided exploration, with well-maintained roads accessible to 2WD vehicles. Visitors can drive through the park, observing animals from designated viewing areas, or enjoy a picnic at one of the shaded picnic sites. The absence of large predators like lions and leopards makes it a safe environment for walking and enjoying the outdoors. The reserve also features a small educational center where you can learn more about the local flora and fauna. While the Gaborone Game Reserve may not offer the same wilderness experience as Botswana's larger national parks, its accessibility, affordability, and diverse wildlife make it a worthwhile destination for tourists and locals alike. It's a perfect spot for a quick escape into nature, a family outing, or a chance to connect with Botswana's natural heritage.
