Mogonye Gorge is a stunning nature preserve located near the village of Lekgolobotlo in southeastern Botswana. The gorge features dramatic cliffs, steep rock walls, and lush vegetation, carved by centuries of water erosion. It is not only a natural wonder but also a sacred site tied to the spiritual traditions of the Balete people, who have long regarded the area as holy. The Mogonye-Mmamotshwane Gorge is the largest in the area and has several waterfalls and pools. The Mogonye Gorge includes Dinkgwana, regarded as a sacred place and ancestral site, Kgophu ya Dinonyane (Birds Spring), a small spring which attracts many types of birds, Khophu ya Thukwi (Aardvaarks) where Aardvaarks once were found in large numbers. Hiking trails wind through the gorge, catering to both seasoned trekkers and casual walkers. Along the trails, visitors can observe diverse wildlife, including various bird species and small mammals. The dominant tree species in the area include the mohudiri (red bushwillow), mosetlha (weeping wattle), mosu (umbrella thorn) and moselesele (sickle bush). The Mogonye community uses these trees for different purposes including fencing kraals, harvesting fruits like mmilo and morula for subsistence and income generation as well as gathering medicinal plants like mohatlha (wild camphor) and mokgwapha (mountain aloe). The gorge is open every day from 8 am to 5 pm. The best time to explore Mogonye Gorge is during the cooler months.
