The Khama Rhino Sanctuary (KRS) is a remarkable conservation area located 25 kilometers north of Serowe, Botswana. Founded in 1989 by residents of Serowe, led by Lt. Gen. Seretse Khama Ian Khama, the sanctuary was created in response to the escalating rhino poaching crisis in Botswana. The sanctuary's primary goal was to provide a protected environment for the dwindling rhino population, with the hope of enabling them to breed and increase their numbers. In 1992, the KRS reintroduced the first four white rhinos from Chobe National Park. Eight more rhinos were brought in from North West National Parks in South Africa. In 2002, the highly endangered black rhino was reintroduced. Today, the sanctuary is home to approximately 35 white rhinos and serves as a source for their reintroduction to other reserves in Botswana. The birth of the first baby black rhino in 2008 was a major milestone for the sanctuary. The sanctuary's 4,300 hectares encompass a diverse landscape of Kalahari sandveld, including the Serwe Pan, a large grass-covered depression with natural waterholes. This habitat supports a wide array of wildlife, including Burchell's zebra, blue wildebeest, eland, gemsbok, springbok, giraffe, and numerous antelope species. Over 230 bird species have been recorded in the sanctuary, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. The Khama Rhino Sanctuary Trust is a community-building expedition that has provided economic benefits to the local community through tourism. The sanctuary offers various activities, including game drives, birding, bush walks, and rhino tracking. Visitors can stay at the campsite or in well-equipped chalets. The Botswana Defence Force patrols the perimeter of the park to ensure the rhinos are well protected.
