Gruta Catedral: Bonito's Underground Cathedral

Gruta Catedral, formerly known as Gruta São Mateus, is a breathtaking cave located just 4 km from the center of Bonito, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Renamed in 2022 to reflect its resemblance to the architecture of medieval Gothic churches, this natural wonder offers visitors a unique and awe-inspiring experience. The journey begins with a visit to the Kadiwéu Cultural Museum, housed in a three-story building near the cave entrance. The museum showcases a collection of artifacts and historical items donated by local residents, offering insights into the region's rich history and culture. Exhibits range from preserved local wildlife to vintage cars from the 1970s. From the museum, a suspended walkway leads into the heart of the cave. Inside, visitors are greeted by a mesmerizing display of geological formations sculpted over thousands of years. Stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and coraloids adorn the cavern, creating an ethereal atmosphere accentuated by the play of light filtering through openings. One of the most striking formations is a stalagmite that bears a remarkable resemblance to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. The cave extends for 180 meters, with a descent of 60 steps, offering explorers diverse angles to inspect the rock formations. Knowledgeable guides accompany visitors, providing information about the cave's geology, history, and delicate ecosystem. The tour is designed to be accessible to all ages, with well-maintained paths and safety equipment provided, including helmets and lanterns. Gruta Catedral is part of a complex of caves in the Bonito region, known for its ecotourism and biodiversity. The surrounding property spans 50 hectares, with 49 hectares of preserved native forest, offering panoramic views from the cave's viewpoints.
