    Discover more about Alvorada Palace

The Palácio da Alvorada, meaning 'Palace of the Dawn,' has been the official residence of Brazil's president since its completion in 1958. Designed by the renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer, it was the first building inaugurated in Brasília, predating the city's official inauguration by two years. Juscelino Kubitschek, who was president at the time, gave the palace its name, stating that Brasília represented a 'new dawn in the History of Brazil'. Niemeyer's design incorporates a modernist style, featuring a combination of marble, glass, and water. The symmetry of the marble columns creates a striking visual effect, especially when reflected in the glass facade and surrounding water. The columns, which have become a symbol of Brasília, appear to barely touch the ground, giving the palace a sense of lightness. The palace is considered a National Historic Heritage Site. The palace has a total area of 7,000 square meters distributed across three floors. The basement houses a movie theater, game room, kitchen, laundry, medical center, and administrative offices. The ground floor contains the state rooms used for official receptions, including the Entrance Hall, Waiting Room, State Room, Library, Mezzanine, Dining Room, Noble Room, Music Room, and Banquet Room. The presidential apartment, consisting of four suites, two guest apartments, and private rooms, is located on the second floor. Visitors can stop and take pictures outside the main gate, about 300 meters from the palace. The palace is constantly guarded by the Dragons of Independence.
