Paranoá Lake: Brasília's Aquatic Heart

Paranoá Lake, inaugurated in 1960, is more than just a body of water; it's an integral part of Brasília's identity. Envisioned in the 19th century and brought to life during the city's construction in the 1950s, the lake was created by damming the Paranoá River. This artificial lake spans approximately 40 square kilometers and reaches depths of up to 38 meters. Its primary purpose was to increase the humidity in Brasília's dry climate, but it quickly evolved into a prime location for leisure and recreation. The lake offers a multitude of activities, from swimming and boating to wakeboarding and windsurfing. The JK Bridge, an architectural icon designed by Alexandre Chan, spans the lake with its unique steel arches, inspired by a stone skipping across the water.
