Discover more about Buriti Square

Praça do Buriti, located in the heart of Brasília, stands as a testament to the city's unique urban design and modernist architecture. Inaugurated on August 25, 1969, the square was designed by Nauro Esteves, with influence from Lúcio Costa's Plano Piloto master plan, which aimed to create a functional and aesthetically pleasing capital. The square spans over 47,000 square meters and includes two water mirrors and 14,000 square meters of gardens. A unique Buriti palm tree, which inspired the square's name, was planted during Brasília's construction. The current palm, planted in 1969, replaced the original. In 1992, an attempt to cut down the tree led to the installation of a metal shield and steel cables to protect it. Praça do Buriti is strategically located on the Monumental Axis and surrounded by key governmental buildings such as the Palácio do Buriti and the Tribunal de Justiça do Distrito Federal e dos Territórios. The Palácio do Buriti, designed by Nauro Jorge Esteves, serves as the headquarters of the executive power of the Federal District. A bronze replica of the Roman Wolf feeding Romulus and Remus, a gift from the Italian government, is located in front of the building. Visitors can explore nearby attractions such as the JK Memorial and the Memorial dos Povos Indígenas. The square is designed to be accessible, with well-paved pathways and ramps.
