Discover more about Cachoeira do Mosquito

Cachoeira do Mosquito is a captivating waterfall nestled within the Área de Proteção Ambiental Marimbus-Iraquara, in the northern part of Lençóis. The waterfall plunges approximately 60 meters (around 197 feet), creating a refreshing pool at its base perfect for a revitalizing swim. The name 'Cachoeira do Mosquito' doesn't come from the insect. Instead, it harkens back to the area's diamond mining past when small diamonds, known locally as 'mosquitos' due to their size, were discovered here. The waterfall is located on private property, the Fazenda Santo Antônio, which has been adapted to welcome tourists. The old farmhouse now houses a restaurant serving traditional cuisine. Two strategically placed viewpoints offer stunning panoramic views of the falls and surrounding landscape, providing excellent photo opportunities. The trail to the base of the falls is roughly 1 km (0.6 miles) and takes about 20 minutes to walk. It's considered a relatively easy hike, though some sections can be steep. While swimming in the waterfall's pool is a major draw, visitors should be aware that the water can be quite cold due to the limited sunlight reaching the area. It is also good to note that during the rainy season (November to March), visiting the falls is not recommended due to the increased water volume and slippery trails. Cachoeira do Mosquito is a rewarding destination, offering a blend of natural beauty, history, and outdoor recreation in the captivating Chapada Diamantina.
