Praça São Miguel: A Cultural Heart in Fernando de Noronha

Praça São Miguel, situated in the heart of Vila dos Remédios on the island of Fernando de Noronha, serves as a focal point for both locals and tourists. The square's most prominent feature is the Palácio de São Miguel, the administrative headquarters of the Fernando de Noronha archipelago. Constructed in 1945 on the ruins of the old prison headquarters, the Palácio de São Miguel was built using local labor. In the past, the building served as the residence for the Governor of the Territory. Inside, you can still see some of the original stone construction. The palace is decorated with mid-20th-century furniture and artwork, including a stained glass window of Saint Michael created by Aurora de Lima. In the evenings, Praça São Miguel comes alive with street food vendors, offering affordable local snacks such as pastel, fish dogs, and tapioca. The square also displays artillery pieces from World War II, remnants from when the archipelago served as a base for the United States. Praça São Miguel is a blend of history, culture, and relaxation.
