The Trilha do Atalaia, located in Fernando de Noronha, is more than just a hike; it's an immersive experience into a vibrant marine ecosystem. There are two main versions of the trail: the short trail (Trilha Curta) and the long trail (Trilha Longa). The short trail is an accessible 1.5km hike to the Atalaia natural pool, ideal for a quick visit and snorkel. The long trail combines the Atalaia visit with the Pontinha-Caieiras trail, offering a more challenging 4-5 hour trek through varied landscapes and additional natural pools. The long trail is considered to have medium-high difficulty.Advance booking through the ICMBio (Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade) is mandatory for all trails in the Atalaia region. This is due to the fragility of the ecosystem and the limited number of visitors allowed per day. The short trail does not require a guide, but the long trail does. During the hike, you'll be treated to stunning views of the island's coastline and unique volcanic rock formations. The natural pools themselves are shallow, with crystal-clear waters perfect for observing juvenile marine life, including baby sharks, octopuses, and colorful fish.Visitors are required to follow strict guidelines to protect the delicate environment. This includes refraining from touching the marine life or the coral, and avoiding the use of sunscreen or other dermocosmetics before entering the water.
