Since 2001, it has been officially declared a Historical and Patrimonial Landmark of Fortaleza. The plaza's history dates back to 1839 when it was just a sandy field with a well. In 1871, it was named in honor of Boticário (Apothecary) Ferreira, who, as president of the Municipal Chamber, reformed and urbanized the area. Throughout the years, the plaza has been known by various names, including Feira Nova, Largo das Trincheiras, Pedro II, and Municipal. The plaza is known for its central clock tower, originally built in 1933 in Art Deco style. The original clock tower was demolished in 1967, but a new one was constructed in 1991. The square also features colonial architecture. Praça do Ferreira has been a gathering place for locals and tourists alike. It is surrounded by shops, cafes, and restaurants.
