Discover more about Fortress of Our Lady of the Assumption

The Fortress of Our Lady of the Assumption is one of Fortaleza's most significant historical landmarks, located on the left bank of the Pajeú creek's mouth. Its origins trace back to 1649, during the period of Dutch invasions, when it was first constructed as the Forte Schoonemborch. Before that, the Fort São Sebastião was erected, but it was demolished due to its fragile construction. In 1654, the Portuguese reclaimed the area, renaming it Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, which later became the namesake of the city. The fortress has a square layout, with each side measuring approximately 90 meters. The structure was rebuilt in 1812 under Lieutenant Colonel Engineer António José da Silva Paulet. The fortress is home to bulwarks named after Our Lady of the Assumption, Saint Joseph, Dom João, and Prince of Beira. Initially armed with five cannons, its arsenal grew to 27 by 1816, demonstrating its military importance. Beyond its military function, the fortress carries cultural significance. It once housed Bárbara de Alencar, considered Brazil's first political prisoner. Today, it also houses the Museum and Pantheon of General Sampaio, the patron of the Infantry branch of the Brazilian Army. Visitors can explore the fortress, appreciate its architecture, and enjoy panoramic views of the coastline and city.
