Discover more about Praça do Ferreira - Centro

Praça do Ferreira, often called the "Coração da Cidade" (Heart of the City), is a bustling plaza in the Centro district of Fortaleza, Ceará. This historical landmark, dating back to 1825, has been a focal point of the city's social and cultural life for nearly two centuries. The plaza is named after Boticário (Apothecary) Ferreira, who, as president of the Municipal Chamber in 1871, initiated a reform that urbanized the space. In 2001, it was officially declared a Historical and Patrimonial Landmark of Fortaleza. Throughout its history, Praça do Ferreira has undergone several transformations. In its early days, it was simply a sandy field with a large well in the center. Over time, it evolved to include artistic kiosks housing cafes, gardens, and a bandstand. A notable feature was the Coluna da Hora (Time Column), an Art Deco-style clock tower built in 1933, which became a popular symbol of the plaza. Although the original tower was demolished in 1967, a new one was erected in 1991. Today, Praça do Ferreira remains a vibrant hub, surrounded by significant buildings like Palacete Ceará, Farmácia Oswaldo Cruz, and Cine São Luiz. It's a place where locals and tourists gather to enjoy the lively atmosphere, street vendors, and cultural events.
