Discover more about Praça da estação fortaleza

Praça da Estação, officially named Praça Castro Carreira, is a vibrant and historically significant square in the heart of Fortaleza, Ceará. Popularly known as the 'Train Station Square,' it owes its name to the central railway station that once defined the area. In the 19th century, this area served as a training ground for colonial and imperial troops. It was also a site for equestrian sports and tournaments. For a time, it was named Campo D'Amélia in honor of Empress Amélia de Leuchtenberg. The construction of the Baturité railway in 1871 cemented its identity as the 'Praça da Estação'. The square is bordered by important streets: General Sampaio, 24 de Maio, Dr. João Moreira, and Castro e Silva. The railway station, built in neoclassical style between 1879 and 1880, was constructed on the site of the former São Casimiro Cemetery, with labor provided by those displaced by the great drought of 1877. The station was initially called Estação Central, later renamed Estação Fortaleza, and finally Estação João Felipe in 1946. Today, Praça da Estação is a bustling transportation hub, with buses converging from various parts of the city. While the train station building remains a historical landmark, the square also offers free Wi-Fi. Visitors can appreciate the architecture, soak in the lively atmosphere, and explore the surrounding shops and eateries.
