Discover more about Aqueduto

Nestled on Ilha Grande in Angra dos Reis, the Aqueduto, or aqueduct, is a captivating historical landmark that showcases Brazil's colonial heritage. Constructed in 1893, commissioned by Emperor Dom Pedro II, this architectural marvel was engineered to transport fresh water from the Abraão stream to the Lazareto, a quarantine hospital that once stood on the island. The aqueduct stretches 125 meters in length and reaches a height of 30 meters, featuring a series of elegant arches. Built by slaves using carved stones and whale oil, the aqueduct had a flow capacity of 1,000 liters per hour. The water was transported to reservoirs at the hospital, which played a crucial role during its operation. Today, the Aqueduto is one of the few historical monuments on Ilha Grande that is easily accessible. Visitors can explore the well-marked trails of the Abraão Circuit, which lead to the aqueduct, as well as other nearby attractions such as the Poção (a natural pool) and Preta Beach. The surrounding area offers panoramic views of the island's verdant hills and sparkling blue waters, creating a serene atmosphere perfect for reflection and appreciation of nature's beauty. Not far from the aqueduct, a stone bench known as "Banco de D. Pedro" can be found near the headwaters. Legend has it that Emperor Dom Pedro II would often sit here, immersed in botany books, composing poems, and sketching the beautiful landscapes or gardens he envisioned. Exploring the Aqueduto provides a unique opportunity to connect with the history and culture of Ilha Grande.
