Itamaracá, whose name derives from the Tupi term meaning 'singing stone' or 'rattling stone', is an island municipality located on the northern coast of Pernambuco, Brazil. Just 48 km from Recife, it's a popular destination known for its historical significance and stunning beaches. The island's history dates back to 1508, with the first Portuguese settlements and even earlier accounts of shipwrecked sailors and French pirates. It was one of the first captaincies of Brazil and home to the first sugar mill in colonial Brazil, constructed in 1516. In 1631, the Dutch built Fort Orange, a strategic stronghold during their occupation, which was later taken over by the Portuguese and renamed Forte de Santa Cruz. Today, the restored fort is a major attraction, drawing approximately 70,000 visitors annually. Itamaracá boasts eleven beaches, each offering unique characteristics.
